President
Sharon Siddique
Sharon, 62, has been an academic, a business
consultant, and of late a shop owner for low vision
products for the past four decades. She was first
diagnosed with myopic macular degeneration at the
age of 30, shortly after the birth of her second
daughter. The condition was mercifully stable for the
next 25 years ago, when she developed cataracts, a
macular hole, and a retinal detachment in her left eye.
Two vitrectomies later, her condition has stabilized
again, and she is taking advantage of relatively good
vision to pursue her various interests.
Secretary
Peh Shing Huei
Shing Huei, 34, is a journalist with The Straits Times.
Myopic macular degeneration first struck him in 1999,
when he was in his final year at the National
University of Singapore. He has lost count of the
number of haemorrhages over the years, but despite
wavy lines and some blur patches, his vision remains
stable and he continues to lead an active independent
life doing the three things he enjoys the most: drive,
read and watch football games.
Treasurer
Lee Soo Mien
Soo Mien, 54, mother of two teenagers, is also
suffering from myopic macular degeneration. It causes
a macular hole to develop in one eye which had to
undergo a vitrectomy in late 2007. She is working in a
laboratory at NUS.
Committee Members
Lim Hsiu Mei
Hsiu Mei, 70, was a former Administrative Service
officer. She was with the civil service for almost four
decades and her last appointment was as deputy
secretary at the Ministry of Community Development.
She is now a board member with the National Council
of Social Service and honorary secretary at the Dover
Park Hospice. She has a macula hole.
Anny Leow
Anny, 64, is a trained nurse, who currently specialise
in clinical eye research and counselling in various
medical problems. She suffered a retina tear in her left
eye in the early 1980s and was treated with Laser.
Her right eye also had a retina tear in 2004 and was
also treated. She has been the co-chairperson in the
Singapore Visioncare programme of the Singapore
Women's Association since 1990.
Doreen Heng
Doreen, 56, a retiree, suffers from Myopic Macula
Degeneration. She was first diagnosed with the
condition in 2003 when she finally consulted an eye
specialist after several years of denial. The disease has
impaired vision in her right eye quite badly and has
started to affect her left eye too. Fortunately, she is
still able to see quite clearly with her left eye, and so
continues to live life independently and to indulge in
her favourite pastimes such as reading, playing the
piano, trying out recipes, and travelling.
Adviser
Associate Professor Au Eong Kah Guan, medical
director and senior consultant eye surgeon at the
Singapore International Eye Cataract Retina Centre.
