President
Sam Fong
Sam, 63, worked as a civil engineer with local and
multinational organisations and retired in 2005.
Greatest achievement is to have succeded in
establishing stable families with two adult children
succeeding well in their careers and families. With his
wife, they are proud grandparents of five wonderful
grandkids. His objectives in encouraging degenerative
eye support groups are to get sufferers to understand
their conditions, cope with their diseases and work out
for themselves the kind of lives they want. For the
past eight years, he lived with glaucoma.
Secretary
Sharon Siddique
Sharon, 61, has been an academic, a business
consultant, and of late a shop owner for low vision
products for the past four decades. She was first
diagnosed with myopic macular degeneration at the
age of 30, shortly after the birth of her second
daughter. The condition was mercifully stable for the
next 25 years ago, when she developed cataracts, a
macular hole, and a retinal detachment in her left eye.
Two vitrectomies later, her condition has stabilized
again, and she is taking advantage of relatively good
vision to pursue her various interests.
Treasurer
Peh Shing Huei
Shing Huei, 33, is a senior political correspondent with
The Straits Times. Myopic macular degeneration first
struck him in 1999, when he was in his final year at
the National University of Singapore. He has lost
count of the number of haemorrhages over the years,
but despite wavy lines and some blur patches, his
vision remains stable and he continues to lead an
active independent life doing the three things he
enjoys the most: drive, read and watch football games.

Her right eye also had a retina tear in 2004 and was
also treated. She has been the co-chairperson in the
Singapore Visioncare programme of the Singapore
Women's Association since 1990.

degeneration. When he was a Senior Estates Officer
in HDB in 1993, his left macula bled. There was no
treatment then. However, in 2004, he was treated
with photodynamic therapy after his right macula bled
twice in two months. Since retiring in 2000, he has
more time to enjoy his hobbies, which include
reading, music, watching TV programmes and using
the computer.
